PACCOATER


Available as Film coating or combination Film / Sugar coating models.


The PACCOATER is designed to deliver fast, flexible and consistent coating performance across a wide variety of products. Suited to R&D and large scale production, the PACCOATER features a side vented pan, with plough shear baffles.

The PACCOATER system consists of the following main components:

Supply Air Handling Unit (with primary, secondary and HEPA filter banks)

Exhaust Air Handling Unit (with primary filters)

PACCOATER Drum

PLC

Peristaltic Pump

Coating Solution Vessel with Stirrer

The PACCOATER is constructed from 3CR12-, 304 and 316 stainless steel and has a perforated pan, which is chain driven by a 3-phase motor, with speed control integrated into the PLC operation.

Temperature control is by way of the PLC integrated non-contact IR thermometer, which measures the tablet bed temperature and adjusts the inlet temperature accordingly. Located in the supply air duct and exhaust air duct close to the perforated pan are two temperature probes that are also connected to the PLC to supply Inlet and Exhaust temperature data. Digital thermometers can also be mounted on the front of the PACCOATER to give independent display of the supply and exhaust air temperatures. The supply air is heated via a single pass steam heat exchanger.


 

PACCOATER




The unit consists of a double cone shaped drum that is mounted in such a manner as to allow rotation about an axis. The Double Cone drum has a valve at the one end and a lid at the other. The lid allows for inspection of the inside of the double cone drum as well as loading of the material / ingredients required for mixing into the "drum". This can either be done manually or by means of a vacuum transfer system. The lid therefore also facilitates connection of the vacuum transfer systems' piping to the Double Cone drum. Both the lid and the valve allows for a tight and positive seal so that material will not leak from the mixer during the mixing process thus minimizing cross contamination and thereby decreasing operator exposure risks.

Powders or granules are removed from the Double Cone drum via the outlet/valve. The butterfly valve complies with cGMP design and can be quickly disassembled and reassembled for cleaning purposes. Operation is by manual turning of the valve handle. The valve has locking position to prevent it from creeping.

The Double Cone Mixer is controlled with a PLC allowing user interface through a HMI touch screen. This interface can be a remote panel mounted to the wall. Safety precautions include a safety beam or switch mounted either in front of the Double Cone Mixer or on the cubicle door. The drive and electrical components and connections as well as the electrical cabinet are housed in the one support column. Access is via two environmentally protected/sealed side panels.

The frame is constructed from 3CR12 Stainless Steel, covered/cladded with 304 Stainless Steel and the construction material for the Double Cone/drum is 316 Stainless Steel. Direct product contact surface finishes comply with European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group (EHEDG) recommendations of 0.8 m Ra or better using 220 grit polishing methods. Frame Cladding is supplied with a Satin Finish.

There is no counter rotating intensifier bar present although it is possible to order the Double Cone Mixer with such a bar present.

PACCO Fluid Bed Dryer




The PACCO Fluid Bed Dryer is designed to cool and dry granulated material by fluidisation in the presence of hot air flowing in an enclosed chamber. The volume of air is sufficient to lift the granules in the chamber for complete drying of each particle.


An exhaust duct is fitted to the fluidisation chamber to remove air from the system to maintain negative pressure necessary for the fluidisation process. The fluid bed dryer has an explosion hatch that withstands pressure shock resulting from an explosion within limits of the pressure shock resistance.


Air is drawn through a fan from outside, and passed through a pre, secondary and HEPPA filter. The air is heated and flows upwards through the material inside the product container and absorbs the moisture from the product in minimum time.


The fluidisation chamber houses filter bags or cartridges in contact with the product to remove fine particles caught in the flow of air which subsequently falls back into the container by operating the shaking devise.

This is a granulator with a centrally mounted blade that sits above a size 12 and 16 stainless steel plain mesh. The blade rotates at variable speed and applies mechanical stress on the material to be crushed resulting in sizing or particle size reduction of materials. The faster the speed of the granulator, the more energy is utilized and a high percentage of fines is generated.

Sizing or comminution on the PACCO horizontal granulator is dependent on mechanical shear forces during milling and the final strength of the granule depends on the excipients, granulating agent and equipment used for granulation.

The horizontal granulator is typically used to size granules in an attempt to improve powder flow characteristics.


This allow for:

Uniform mixing of ingredients if the powders are of the same size and distribution

Improved dispersion of colours and active ingredients in the granulation

Improved flow properties of powders thus reducing tablet weight variation and improving uniformity of content

PACCO Horizontal Hi-Speed Mixer-Blender


This is a high speed mixer-granulator with a centrally mounted impeller at the bottom of the mixer that rotates at high speed mixing components quickly owing to the high shear forces and the expansion of the bed that allows diffusive mixing. There is also a side-mounted chopper for in situ wet granulation, its main purpose is to delump / deagglomerate dry powders and larger wet masses.

The unit consists of a mixing vessel (a.k.a. container or bowl) that is mounted in a vertical position. The vessel bottom is flat and the walls are conical. There is an opening in the wall for product discharge.

The mixing bowl has a hinged and counterweighted lid to aid in its raising and lowering. There are multiple openings on the lid:

Liquid charge port

The unit has two mixing impellers. The main mixing impeller is centrally mounted at the bottom of the mixing bowl and has three blades. It is belt driven and is capable of rotating at a slow and fast speed. The main impeller is also removable for cleaning purposes.

The second impeller is a chopper unit which is side mounted on the mixing bowl. It is also possible of rotating at a slow and fast speed. The chopper is driven by a separate dedicated motor. The chopper blades are also removable for cleaning.

Powders or wet granules are removed from the mixing bowl via the discharge outlet. A pneumatically actuated piston opens and closes the discharge port in the wall of the mixing bowl.

The unit can be controlled through either push button control or integrated PLC. The control panel can be used to control various operations / functions i.e. setting impeller speeds, setting of mixing timer, opening of the discharge valve etc.

The PACCO Mill is a high energy mill and one of the most versatile ad widely used designs in the pharmaceutical industry. The principle of size reduction in the hammer mill is one of high-velocity impact between the rapidly moving hammers / knives / blades mounted on a rotor and powder particles. This mill can produce a wide range of particle sizes, even down to micrometer size. The particle shape, however, is generally sharper and more irregular than that produced by compression methods.

The force imparted by the hammers and the screen opening size and shape control the degree of particle size reduction. Some of the characteristics include:

They can be used for size reduction of wet or dry granulations and milling of raw materials

There is a wide range of interchangeable feed throats and variable feed screw systems available to optimize the feed rate

Hammers can rotate horizontally or vertically, based on the rotor configuration, and at variable speeds

Hammers can be fixed or free-swinging

Hammers with blunt or impact edges are preferred for pulverizing and knife or sharp edges are preferred for chopping or sizing of granules

Screen openings generally vary from 0.3 to 38mm, with round or square perforations, diagonal or straight slots, or with a rasping surface

Feed rate and dryness of the granules are important variables relative to the material

Types of hammers, rotor speed, screen type, thickness, and opening size are important variables relative to the machine

Ease of setup, clean-up, minimum scale-up problems, and ability to handle a wide variety of size and type of feedstock are some advantages

Heat buildup, screen wear, and potential clogging of screens are some of the limitations

The static dryers are designed for total air rejection. This means that no air is recirculated in the oven. The trays are bullnose type for easy cleaning and there is no contamination as all welds are seamless and clevice free.

The unit consists of a helical blade / paddle that is mounted in such a manner as to allow rotation about an axis. The hemispherical trough has a flush valve at the bottom and a lid and safety grid at the top. There is an air purge operational at either end of the shaft of the blade/paddle to ensure that no powder can enter next to the shaft. The inspection port in the lid allows for inspection of the inside of the Ribbon Blender. Loading of the material / ingredients are accomplished with the lid raised and the safety bar kept in position. Powders or granules are removed from the Ribbon Blender via the outlet / discharge flush valve.

The Ribbon Blender is controlled with a push button interface. Safety precautions include a safety grid with an open/close sensor as well as an open / close sensor mounted in the lid of the Ribbon Blender.

This is an agitator mixer, fitted with a blade / paddle that is rotating about a central axis, when operated at the correct speed and working volume the helical blades move through a hemispherical trough. This results in a shearing action occurring between blade and powder resulting in convection mixing. The shearing action of this mixer may not be sufficient to break up lumps or aggregates, and dead spots may also be difficult to eliminate.

The mixer does however excel in mixing poorly flowing materials and segregation is less likely to occur than in a tumbler mixer. Working volumes will typically occupy 35% to 65% of the total "trough" volume.

The frame is constructed from 304 Stainless Steel. The hemispherical trough, the blades/paddles, the safety grid, the valve and the lid is 316 Stainless Steel. Product contact surfaces have a smooth finishing. Frame cladding can be supplied with a satin finish.

PACCO Vacuum bins are designed for vacuum transfer of powders into bins and the transferring of powders from the bins by vacuum into process bowls through a conveying line via a PIAB or similar vacuum transfer system.

The vacuum bin can also be used for warehousing and transporting powders. The interior is crevice free and has a smooth finish.

All product contact parts are 316 stainless steel
